In May 2002, the SBC selected its first class of 16 trainees to study at the newly formed SBC Academy Training Program. An extension of the SBC, the Academy is designed to enhance the training currently offered by area dance studios. Trainees attend weekly classes, as well as participate in master classes and lectures with the SBC dancers.

The training program is offered in 3 semesters and is open to intermediate level dancers currently taking 3 or more hours of class per week at the studio of their choice. Placement is by audition only and acceptance of a trainee position demands a full-year commitment. Trainee auditions are held concurrent with SBC Member auditions.
